Celebrating, protecting our libraries during National Library Week

April 18, 2007 - link >>

Congressman Rick Boucher, Main Street Newspapers.com

The week of April 15- 21 has been designated as National Libraries Week and is a time to celebrate the many contributions that libraries and librarians make everyday in our communities.

The educational and community benefits that our public libraries provide are seemingly limitless. Libraries serve as information resources for school projects, homework, and research papers, and instill in our children a love of reading and knowledge. Libraries serve as gateways for users to explore different worlds, communicate with experts in a particular field, or participate in classes and lectures.

Inouye Offers Senate Net-Neutrality Bill

Ted Hearn, Multichannel News

In a sign of tension atop the Senate Commerce Committee, Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) sponsored legislation Friday that would impose network-neutrality mandates on cable operators, phone companies and other providers of high-speed-Internet access.

Inouye’s support puts him at odds with Commerce Committee chairman Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), who thinks regulation of broadband-service providers is premature because market-power abuse by cable and phone companies has not been demonstrated.

Gun owners, librarians unite against Bells

April 24, 2006 - link >>

Ed Gubbins, telephonyonline.com

A diverse and perhaps unlikely group of political activists and associations assembled today to voice opposition to a U.S. House bill that it says would impede InterNet innovation by undermining network neutrality.

The “SavetheInterNet.com Coalition” includes InterNet pioneer and Google executive Vint Cerf, Gun Owners of America, political action group Moveon.org, Craigslist founder Craig Newmark, Consumer Federation of America, American Library Association and others.

The group pointed to its own diversity--uniting such disparate interests as Gun Owners of America and Afro-Netizen.com, an online African American community group--as evidence of the righteousness of its cause as well as the range of stakeholders in Net neutrality.
