Net Neutrality Comments Flood FCC Frank Barbetta, Info Tech & Telecom News

Summer reading at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) included more than 11,000 formal filings and public email comments attempting to persuade the U.S. regulator on the necessity or needlessness of instituting stricter network neutrality controls over major providers of Internet broadband.

Against the backdrop of a market that is leveraging high-speed links to sell voice, Internet, and video services, the FCC will mostly be examining already well-trod ground articulated by pro-and-con net neutrality forces over the past couple of years.

Is the Internet Doomed to Self-destruct? Michael Castelluccio, Hispanic Business

The Internet exploded like few other tech revolutions, and the digital clouds are still swirling with no indication of settling soon. But there’s a problem. According to Jonathan Zittrain, professor of Internet Governance and Regulation at Oxford University, England, the seeds of the Net’s destruction are being sown in the same wind streams that are now scattering its influence.

In a recent article in the Harvard Business Review ("Saving the Internet"), Zittrain describes a situation that seems to be scripted into the Internet’s future. The need to protect the user from viruses, scams, spam, and porn will lead to what the professor calls “tethered appliances” that forego most of the freedoms we now have with our PCs and the world network. A tethered appliance is a locked-down piece of hardware that you can do nothing with except what is designed as its primary purpose. Tivo is an example. And although your control over the device is minimized, the manufacturer might be able to modify the device remotely, perhaps even without your knowing.

Report: Net neutrality could kill ‘e-health’ plans Anne Broache, CNET News

For years, we’ve been hearing about the need for a tech-savvier American health care system that could make paper health records, prescriptions, X-rays and even in-person checkups into relics. But all of that could be derailed unless U.S. policymakers reject calls for so-called Net neutrality regulations, a new report warns.

That’s the position of the U.S. Internet Industry Association (USIIA), a 13-year-old trade association that represents “companies engaged in Internet commerce, content and connectivity.” Verizon is the biggest name represented on its board of directors, which also includes representatives from ServInt, a maker of “virtual private servers;” and Internet Colorado, a small ISP. (I requested a complete listing of its members, but USIIA did not respond to my request by press time. Update 10:45 a.m. PDT: A USIIA representative said the group has a “non-disclosure policy” for those names.)

Let Network Operators, Not Regulators, Handle Internet Traffic, Report Says Alexis Fabbri, Communications Daily

Network operators should have freedom to experiment with ways to handle rising Internet traffic, a report by Analysys Consulting said. While the report’s author didn’t come out against net neutrality rules in a Thursday conference call, his work seems to back keeping the Internet free of new laws.

To “keep pace with current and future bandwidth demands,” major investment in new capacity and network technologies is needed, the report said. The Internet “is not in a crisis,” but new applications and the “explosion of video services” are consuming more bandwidth, said Matt Bennett, executive director of the New Millenium Research Council. Network managers and operators “need the opportunity to find the best ways to manage their traffic,” he said.

Net neutrality? Google, go first! Johna Till Johnson, Network World

You’ve got to admit that when it comes to public relations, Google totally rocks. The company’s goofy name has become the generic term for “search the Web”—a branding coup your average Madison Avenue marketing wizard would kill his grandmother for. And the company’s motto ("Don’t be evil") and ostentatious eco-friendliness successfully promote the image of a wacky company that just wants to be your best buddy.
