Sohn To Bloggers: Target Inouye Ted Hearn, Multichannel News

Washington – The leader of an intellectual property rights group on Wednesday urged political and technology bloggers to “target” Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) because the Senate Commerce Committee chairman had failed to advance net neutrality legislation so far in 2007.

Gigi Sohn, president and co-founder of Public Knowledge, a group that supports federal regulation of broadband networks to ensure an open exchange between users and Web-based service providers, expressed disappointment in Capitol Hill Democrats, chiefly Inouye, for failing to hold hearings or move net neutrality aimed at cable and phone companies.

Groups Press FCC on Comcast, Net Neutrality Kim Hart, Washington Post

Several consumer groups are challenging federal regulators to stop Comcast from interfering with Internet traffic on its network.

The groups, including Free Press, Public Knowledge and Media Access Project, filed a petition with the Federal Communications Commission to take action against the cable giant. The petition, filed Thursday, will serve as the first test of the FCC’s position on the issue of net neutrality, which has become a hot-button topic among technologists and policymakers in Washington. Net neutrality refers to measures that would bar Internet providers like Comcast and phone companies from giving preferential treatment to content on their networks.

WASHINGTON --Two Senators on Friday called for a congressional hearing to investigate reports that phone and cable companies are unfairly stifling communications over the Internet and on cell phones.

Sens. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., and Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, said the incidents involving several companies, including Comcast Corp., Verizon Wireless and AT&T Inc., have raised serious concerns over the companies’ “power to discriminate against content.”

They want the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee to investigate whether such incidents were based on legitimate business policies or unfair and anticompetitive practices and if more federal regulation is needed.

Comcast case stirs up argument about Net neutrality Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Should your Internet service provider be allowed to block your computer from connecting to services it doesn’t like?

Should your ISP be allowed to slow down access to sites that offer a service that competes with its own services?

Those questions form the core of the argument for “Net neutrality.” Recent revelations about Internet service provider Comcast’s interfering with its customers’ service has fanned the argument back into flame.
